Concentrating effort where the UK can win

The UK doesn't need to be self-sufficient across every layer of the AI stack.  But British companies are already indispensable in key areas, and we want to make sure many more UK-based companies become indispensable in the years ahead.

Rather than build a sovereign wall across the entire AI value chain, which could see us miss out on the best breakthroughs from across the world, we will build a sovereign edge. This means concentrating every pound of investment into domains where the UK has strengths to build on and government backing can play a decisive role in building a global winner.

We already know the kinds of areas we will focus on: AI-driven medical research, efficient compute, AI for science, 'next gen' models and AI governance and safety. Each is an area where UK companies can credibly aim lead the world. We will be transparent in these areas of focus, so founders know when to apply, and update them regularly as this technology evolves.

Built to help you scale

We will make early-stage investments of up to £20m alongside private co-investors, with market terms and delegated authority to match the speed of the market. We usually invest early-stage, where our backing can have an outsized impact on a startup’s trajectory.

We can offer a unique support package, using tools only government has, in a way no private VC can match. This includes fully funded access to public compute, public procurement opportunities, grants for building AI assets, and fast-tracked access to wider government opportunities.

Hiring internationally can be a burden, we are here to change this. We’ll pay for an initial 10 fast-tracked visas for R&D hires - granted within one working day - with a direct line to escalate and unblock any delays.
